Zachary Gerth
Hi Everyone,
My name is Zach Gerth,
and I'm a graduate student at Columbia's School of International and Public
Affairs. I am working with a team from Columbia's Center on Sustainable
Investment that focuses on the remittance system of Haiti, and the ideas that the
community has to improve that system.
Our understanding is
that the costs of sending remittances to family members back home are higher
for Haitians than it is for any other community in the region, and that more
recent attempts to improve that situation have largely failed because members
of the Haitian community have not been consulted about what they want and need
from the remittance process. Our project looks to gather information through
discussions with members of the Haitian community in and around New York, in
order to better inform our understanding of how this system affects the lives
of Haitians both domestically and abroad, and with the ultimate goal of
proposing improvements that come directly from this better understanding.
Our first goal is to establish contacts in the community here in
New York who might be interested in speaking with us, or who might be able to
direct us to individuals, organizations, or groups, who could arrange for us to
speak with the community.
If you would be able
to meet with me or members from my team, or are able to connect me with people
who can, please e-mail me or give me a call, at ZMG2105@columbia.edu, or 305-998-8839.
Thanks very much for your time, and I look forward to speaking with you,
Zach Gerth
